I came across an article written by a black woman named Elizabeth Salaam for a San Diego Periodical that she works for. The Periodical then showcased some carelessness and more importantly some of the ignorance that is in society amongst “people” and is part of the reason why there are some black people who continue to struggle with self-identity… You can’t tell by the cover illustration but the goal of her writing this article was to actually tell her story of her issues with her kids assimilating in schools and to promote a positive black self-image, but when she turned in her article she had no idea that the Periodical would do something like this with the illustration. The caption on the cover states:

The white girls like

the black guys,

and the Mexican girls

like the black guys,

and the Filipino girls

like the black guys,

and the black guys

like them, too.

But no one likes the black girls.

The writer says she didn’t know the Editor would do that. They used a photo illustrating a female African-American toddler who is pulling her “Natural Hair” to make it straight. Its powerful imagery because that Child at her young age has already noticed somehow that “Society” has depicted that who she is and her hair “naturally” is not admired or accepted and does not represent the standard for beauty in “America”… Which is clearly wrong. We (SanCopha League) feel strongly about this issue of self identity amongst the black community. We believe that people should be informed properly to know at the very least that black woman “naturally” are beautiful and support the reinforcement of their positive imagery and there unique beauty.

Unless conservation efforts are stepped up, many marine species will be introduced to future generations not in an aquarium, but by Pixar. A recent paper, which looked at the conservation status of the families of species that appeared in Finding Nemo, has some pretty stark findings. Many of the animals from the beloved movie, such as Sheldon the seahorse, Bruce the shark, Crush the sea turtle, Mr. Ray the eagle ray, and Nigel the pelican, are listed as threatened by the authors of the study. More troubling, we’re critically lacking in information for many beloved marine species. We may not now how precarious the ocean situation is until species or even entire families start disappearing.

What's in the Fiscal Cliff Deal? Here's a Rundown.:

President Obama is casting the fiscal cliff deal as a fulfillment of his campaign pledge to ask for more in taxes from the wealthiest 2 percent, while Mitch McConnell is boasting that 99 percent of his constituents won’t be hit with tax increases. How can that be? As with so much in the fiscal cliff—er, fiscal crisis—negotiations, it’s a matter of semantics. The top income tax rate will rise only on households earning $450,000 or more, but those earning more than $250,000 will see some loopholes phased out, so they’ll end up paying more as well.

To simplify matters a bit, here is a rundown of some of the agreement’s key specifics, as reported by the Washington Post and others:

Taxes

For couples earning more than $450,000 (or individuals earning more than $400,000), Bush-era tax cuts will expire, and the top income tax rate will rise from 35 percent to 39.6 percent

For couples earning less than $250,000 (or individuals earning less than $200,000), Bush-era tax cuts will be made permanent

For households earning between those two figures, some exemptions and deductions will expire

Investment taxes and estate taxes will rise, though with big exemptions

Stimulus tax credits for college tuition and the working poor will be extended for five years

Benefits for the long-term unemployed will be extended for one year

The alternative minimum tax will not go into effect for some 30 million taxpayers, but the payroll tax cut will expire, hitting most taxpayers

Some stimulus tax credits for businesses, including in the renewable energy sector, will be extended for one year

Revenues

The deal will raise about $600 billion over the next decade compared to a pre-fiscal cliff baseline, less than the $1.6 trillion* Obama first sought

Compared to a post-fiscal cliff baseline, meanwhile, the deal is a huge tax cut that will slash revenue by some $3.7 trillion

Spending cuts

Sequestered cuts to defense and other budgets will be delayed two months, with a plan to replace them with equal measures of targeted cuts and revenue increases

Miscellaneous

Doctors who provide Medicare won’t face scheduled pay cuts

A nine-month farm bill fix will avoid the “dairy cliff”

Congress will have its pay frozen again

So: You say 2 percent, I say 1 percent. You say tax hike, I say tax cut. But let’s not call the whole thing off.

In the “doll test,” psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark used four plastic, diaper-clad dolls, identical except for color. They showed the dolls to black children between the ages of three and seven and asked them questions to determine racial perception and preference. Almost all of the children readily identified the race of the dolls. However, when asked which they preferred, the majority selected the white doll and attributed positive characteristics to it. The Clarks also gave the children outline drawings of a boy and girl and asked them to color the figures the same color as themselves. Many of the children with dark complexions colored the figures with a white or yellow crayon. The Clarks concluded that “prejudice, discrimination, and segregation” caused black children to develop a sense of inferiority and self-hatred. This photograph was taken by Gordon Parks for a 1947 issue of Ebony magazine. (via)

The same study was replicated in 2008. Dark-skinned children still by far selected the white doll. Repeatedly.

This made me want to cry. I love my chocolatey skin and kinky hair. My parents taught me that I was as smarts as, as pretty as and as good as the white kids that made up my suburbs. My daddy told me to always be “unforgivably black”. People want to try to diminish my blackness

What is it about white guys wanting to pull your hair?!? Dated a black guy and he never pulled my hair but then, I was relaxed. I was hemmed up by my head and I could think was , “Thank God, I twisted up my hair and sealed my ends.” Was very pleasurable though. Gotta keep my hair in protective styles for this one.

I’m a hater, you hear? A H8R, straight with no chaser. So, I’m walking along in the mall post X-mas and you know how you check out people? Ok…I’m checking out people. The kiddo is behaving amazing well given that he usually doesn’t like crowds of people but there’s lot of cool stuff still to look at. Anyways…does not this dude with gorgeous twists come by and I could help but stare. Since we’re both black, we do the “black unity” head nod acknowledgment to each other. I comment on how nice his twist are and ask him what product(s) he’s using. He laughs and says water and JBCO and a little bit of shea butter is all! I think of the small fortune of natural haircare products I have in my bathroom and my twists don’t come out looking that smooth and tight. WTH? WTH? It’s just not fair :(
